Around the Church for February 9, 2022

Wednesday Adult Forum Resumes TONIGHT at 7pm via Zoom

The current 3-week Adult Forum series will be exploring social justice..
This teach-in series equips folks with the tools to begin engaging the difficult work of uncovering systems of power, domination, and oppression at work within us all. In our three-part series, we address the ways in which systemic racism and white supremacy function, how to address internalized dominance and white fragility, and how to take action in our congregations and communities to decenter whiteness and integrate racial justice tactics in our ministries.

Tonight we will:
• Define racism and white supremacy
• Discuss the ways in which white supremacy shows up in our everyday contexts, and distinguish white supremacy from projected notions of racism
• Connect the ways in which race and gender are linked, and why it is essential that conversations about gender are also conversations about racism.
Contact the church at 717-238-9304 if you would like registration information.

3rd in the Burg is Back! February 18 – 6-9 pm

Visit the church from 6-9 pm to view artwork of Harry Spilker and Glenn Ginder. Harry Spilker is a 27-year old young man with Down syndrome whose artistic medium is photography. He captures images with his iPad or cell phone, often using special effects. He then further manipulates the colors and other aspects of the pictures to create an artistic effect, using various apps on his devices. Harry uses color to evoke a mood in his photographs. He especially likes to photograph everyday objects and scenes and then create boldly colored abstract pieces that evoke an emotional response. Glenn [has] “always been in awe of the wonders of nature – helping unsually shaped “driftwood” (found wood) to become pieces of art.”
We will also have LIVE music from 7-8:30 pm provided by local musician Henry Koretzky on Mandolin and Guitar playing selections of Bluegrass, Folk ,Americana, and Celtic acoustic music.

Musical Trip Planned for February 20 at 2pm

Betty Rader is planning a trip to the Theater Harrisburg performance of A Secret Garden at the Whitaker Center.
Orphaned in India, 11-year-old Mary Lennox returns to Yorkshire to live with her reclusive uncle Archibald, whose invalid son Colin has had to bear the guilt of his mother Lily’s death. When Mary discovers her Aunt Lily’s hidden garden, locked shut and overgrown with vines, Mary is determined to revive the beauty that once was. Surrounded by spirits from the past, who both warn and welcome her, Mary begins to peel away the layers of sadness that cover the estate, showing us the power that a single individual can have to bring light into darkness.

Please sign up at the welcome center or call the church office if you plan to attend. The cost is $30 per ticket.
