Warm Hearts and Warm Hands Kit Instructions

All items must be new. Do not wash any of the items as they will be considered used. Please remove all packaging except for toothbrushes and soap.

REQUESTED ITEMS (Please include one of each of the following listed items.)

  • Heavy Blanket or Sleeping Bag
    This item should be able to provide some significant protection from weather.
  • Hand Towel
    Must be good quality. Kitchen, cleaning & microfiber towels ARE acceptable. Please ensure towel is dry.
  • Wash Cloth (Adult size)
    Please ensure wash cloth is dry.
  • Bath size soap (2.5 oz. and larger)
    No Ivory, Jergens or Lisa brand soaps accepted (due to moisture content). Do not remove from original packaging.
  • Baggie
    Ziploc sandwich bag large enough for soap once used.
  • Toothbrush (Adult size)
    Ensure packaging is completely sealed. Dental ads are okay.
  • Toothpaste (Any size)
  • Comb (Any size or shape comb including picks and pocket combs)
  • Composition Book or Blank Journal
    Positive messages okay.
  • Pen - Blue or black ink.
  • Pair of socks pair of gloves hat 1 each.
    Please make these items as gender neutral as possible. The intent is to provide warmth.
  • Prayer Shawl *optional*
    Positive messages okay.

Packaging: Lay the blanket flat. Put all of the items in the center. Fold it up like a package. Use two old neckties to secure it. Ribbon or small bungee cords may be used.

Founded in 1983, Downtown Daily Bread (DDB) is a ministry of Pine Street Presbyterian Church. It is a one-stop soup kitchen, shelter, and services for every person in Harrisburg who struggles with hunger and homelessness.

Due to COVID-19 and social distancing, volunteer work in the Soup Kitchen and Shelter is suspended through May 2021.

Volunteers

Since Downtown Daily Bread’s beginning in 1983, volunteers have played a significant role, especially in the Soup Kitchen. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, volunteers logged an amazing 1,680 hours per month by serving a warm lunch daily to an average of 100 people.

Due to the pandemic and social distancing, volunteer work at Downtown Daily Bread is suspended through May 2021. Please check back in June. If you have a question, call us at (717) 238-4717, ext. 122.

Downtown Daily Bread's life-saving programs are fueled by annual donations from individuals, family foundations, churches and community organizations, regional corporations, local businesses, and county government.

We honor this generosity by practicing fiscal accountability and efficiency. Our accounting records are audited annually by an external firm. In addition, we contract with The Foundation for Enhancing Communities (TFEC) for all financial accounting including gift processing.
