The Art of the Memoir (or Why You Shouldn’t Write Memoir)

One of the most popular literary forms today has its roots in Christian faith. St. Augustine wrote a memoir—The Confessions—which continues to be the model on which memoirs are written. Doug will explore the history of the memoir, sample a few of the best, and offer encouragement to anyone who wants to write a personal story. The Rev. Doug Brouwer will lead this forum. Rev. Douglas J. Brouwer was ordained to the ministry of word and sacrament at Pine Street in September 1980 and was an associate pastor for five years. He then served churches in Illinois, Michigan, and Florida, and retired in 2018 from the International Protestant Church in Zürich, Switzerland. A memoir about his 40 years of ministry, Chasing After Wind: A Pastor’s Life, will be published later this year. Doug can be contacted at 17260 South Street, Holland, Michigan 49424.
