MAPS presents organist ERIC PLUTZ Sunday, October 29, 2023.
Eric Plutz is the organist at Princeton University, where his responsibilities include playing for weekly services at the Chapel, academic ceremonies, and solo concerts, as well as accompanying the University Chapel Choir in services and concerts. Mr. Plutz “performs with gusto, flair, clarity, and strong yet pliant rhythmic control. James Hildreth, for The American Organist. “Plutz is a master craftsman… his performances are sensitive, emotional, stunningly accurate, and spectacularly musical… truly a world-class performance by a world-class musician.” James Reed for The Diapason.
The recital will feature two major works: Louis Vierne’s Fifth Symphony and J. S. Bach’s Passacaglia. Canadian organist Lynnwood Farnam premiered Vierne’s Fifth Symphony on December 21, 1925, at the Church of the Holy Communion in New York. The Fifth Symphony is Vierne’s longest symphony and represents his style’s zenith and the peak of the cyclic form. J. S. Bach’s Passacaglia, BWV 582, is long said to be an early work of the composer since copies of it appeared in collections with other youthful works; however, recent research suggests otherwise. Indeed, the piece is as brilliant, complex, and profound as any of Bach’s later works. Robert Schumann described the variations of the passacaglia as “intertwined so ingeniously that one can never cease to be amazed.”

Adult Forum
Sunday, October 29 11:30 am Adult Forum will be led by Mwat Asedeh, I hail from Nigeria and spent my entire childhood there. In 2014, I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Missions and Evangelism from JETS (Jos ECWA Theological Seminary). After completing my bachelor’s degree, I served as a missionary in my home denomination in Nigeria from 2015 to 2017. Later, I served in the Gambia from 2018 to 2019. I am happily married to Achsah, and we are blessed with three children named Dariah, Dominic Jr., and George.
In 2022, I graduated from Lancaster Theological Seminary with an M.Div. and served as the full-time covenant pastor of Bethany Presbyterian Church Mendenhall for approximately a year. I am now enrolled at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology, pursuing a master’s degree in Project Management. Additionally, I am in the process of becoming a minister member of Donegal Presbytery.
In my free time, I enjoy playing soccer, photography, and watching movies.
Mwat will speak about Community and worship from a West African perspective.

October Giving Barrel
Hansel and Gretel Learning and Daycare Center
Most of us have experienced an uptick of inflation as we shop for needed food items or gas and pay for utilities. For families with very young children, there is another budget-stressing daily need: DIAPERS. Depending on the age of children and brand names of diapers, parents scramble to afford between $50 and $80 dollars a month for one child. Although diaper banks may help some eligible families, these banks are unable to keep up with demand.
To ease this diaper distress locally, October’s Barrel collection will help families at the Hansel and Gretel Learning and Daycare Center on Walnut Street in Harrisburg. This center serves a diverse population open to children from six months to kindergarten. Although any sizes would be welcome, these are the details about the most needed items:
- Diapers (any brand) sizes 2, 3, and 4, especially size 3 and 4
- Fragrance-free wipes: the center uses Natural Care Sensitive and Fragrance Free (Huggies Brand)
For parents who hustle to feed, dress, and transport children to daycare, an extra supply of diapers is a welcome blessing. Contact Laura Messner with any questions.
2nd Annual Rock N Roll Halloween Concert and Costume Party
It is time to dust off your favorite Halloween Costume and your dancing shoes because you are invited to the 2nd Annual Rock N Roll Halloween Concert and Costume Party! All proceeds from the event go towards the many services provided at Pine Street’s mission partner, Downtown Daily Bread.
The event is Sunday, October 29, 2023 from 5:00 pm – 9:00 pm, at the Englewood in Hershey, and once again features:

Tickets are $30 general admission, and $70 for the VIP section. Costume parade and contest with cash prizes for the winners!

Holiday Parade
Pine Street plans to participate in the Harrisburg Christmas Parade on Saturday, November 18th, beginning at 9:30 am. The parade will feature giant balloons, decorated floats, marching bands, dance teams, and more. This year’s parade theme is “Rockin’ Around the Burg.”
We hope that you will sign up to walk the route and sing a few Christmas songs along with our banner carriers. Whether you are a good singer or not, please become one of our carolers. Members of our choir have agreed to participate and lead in song. Come to the gathering place to sign up.
Advent is Coming
Pine Streeters get ready for Christmas in many ways. One way is by using a special Advent Devotional Guide with daily scripture and reflections. In past years, the church purchased Advent booklets or reprinted commercially available guides. Other years, members were referred to online devotional readings. Last year, Pine Street created its very own Advent Devotional Guide. This resource was so popular we’re doing it again! We are writing our very own 2023 Advent Devotional. To do this we need your help.
This year’s theme is “How Does a Weary World Rejoice?” Everyone is invited to become an Advent Author or Artist. Advent Authors and Artists will have the opportunity to write at least one short devotional or submit one piece of seasonal art for publication. Each Advent Author or Artist will be given a specific scripture text and date for your reflection. If you are willing to be an Advent Author or Artist, please reply to Krystle at [email protected], or phone the church office at 717-238-9304. You will then be sent specific details in plenty of time to put your thoughts to paper. To make this Advent project a success, your participation is important. Please respond today!
