Around the Church for April 27, 2022

Annual Meeting of the Congregation and Corporation
Session has scheduled the Annual Meeting of the Congregation for THIS SUNDAY May 1, 2022, immediately after the end of worship. Please plan on staying a little later than usual to participate in electing officers for the coming term and other business affecting our Pine Street community!

Help to Beautify Allison Hill
Pine Street members and friends are invited to join the tree planting effort sponsored by the City of Harrisburg this Friday/Saturday, April 29 and 30, at 9:00 a.m each day. Meet at Cameron and 15th Streets in Allison Hill.

ArtsFest
This year, our booth will be located in the KidsFest section of the art festival and will offer children an engaging watercolor painting opportunity! Every young artist who participates in Pine Street’s activity will be invited to create a 6×6 inch watercolor painting they make with brushes and stamps. Each artist will be given watercolor paper with a waterproof drawing of a dragonfly with foliage to which dragonflies are attracted. Or, if the artists prefer, they may use blank watercolor paper to paint a unique piece of art. After finishing their painting, the young artists will each receive a colorful badge they can wear, which identifies them as an “ArtsFest 2022 Artist” and includes the words – “Sponsored with Love, Pine Street Presbyterian Church.

While at Pine Street’s booth, artists will also be encouraged to work on a collaborative 22 x 30-inch watercolor painting of the Susquehanna River which, when finished, will be on display at Pine Street’s Gathering Area in time for the June 17 “Third in the Burg” celebration of Harrisburg’s arts and cultural scene! The young artists, their families, and friends will be invited to enjoy refreshments, see the collaborative painting and other pieces of art by local artists!

As a follow-up to ArtsFest and June 17th’s Third in the Burg event, all interested children will be invited to a free watercolor class held at Pine Street later this summer. In the class, children will learn about and practice different techniques to add texture while painting with watercolors.

To help make this happen, the Engaging Our Neighbors Team needs your help in the booth during ArtsFest providing supplies such as paper towels, used button-down shirts the children can wear as “art smocks,” etc. Sign-up sheets can be found in the Gathering Area. We look forward to as many people as possible becoming involved with this event!

May Barrel Collection
Our new Afghan neighbors will be the focus of May’s barrel collection. The International Service Center, with great gratitude for the generous support Pine Street has offered, suggests donations of diapers and these culturally appropriate food items and cooking tools:

Aahu barah basmati sela rice (google and buy online)
Dried fruit
Nuts
Electric mixers
Pressure cookers
Dumpling steamer pots (multi-tier)

Although not for the barrel, TVs in working order are still needed, and a few households still need furniture. Anyone who has a TV or furniture to donate is asked to photograph it and send the photos to Hosna Arefee at ISC. She can be reached at Hosna@isc76.org or 717-941-9856.
Additional Afghan Volunteer Opportunities
ISC has moved from finding homes for nearly all the refugees and jobs for many of the employable men to now focusing on acculturation and self sufficiency for the families as they begin new lives in this country. Driving instruction, English language skills, and financial literacy are three areas of ongoing support. ISC needs one or more volunteer(s)who can be available to teach English on Saturday mornings and one or more people with cars who are willing to help teach the refugees to drive in preparation for obtaining their learners’ permits and drivers’ licenses.

If you have questions about volunteer opportunities, please contact Chris Filipovich at 717-503-0519.

Online Member Directory
Recently there have been quite a few members who have had difficulty accessing the online directory. If you too are having difficulty, please contact the church office for instructions.

Current COVID Procedure
Pine Street Presbyterian Church will follow CDC guidelines to ease masking requirements and allow in-person gatherings, including food. While Dauphin and Cumberland Counties are in the low or medium community levels (according to the CDC’s “COVID-19 by County” page found at
